Probably the best-known chilli in the world.
Rating at between 2,500 and 10,000 Scoville units they range from mild to hot . A staple of Tex-Mex cuisine, being stuffed with cheese and coated in bread cumbs, in the UK most of us will have come across them sliced and added to Cheese Nachos or as a topping on Pizza.
There are a number of varieties sold as jalapeno’s, but each has the unique cylindrical shape, normally they grow to between 5 – 10cm long and 3 – 4 cm in diameter with the plant growing 60 – 90 cm high and producing between 20 and 30 chillies.
They can grow well in the UK in a green house, taking some 90 days to reach their best.
Mostly they eaten green, the best ones have corky lines in the skin, they will at the end of the season ripen fully to red, farmers will often be unable to sell these and then are then smoked and sold as Chipotles.
You will find them sold in almost every supermarket sliced in jars, some of the best once I have tasted are from Giuliano who do them either whole or sliced.
